Pharmacist Supervisor

The Pharmacist Supervisor is responsible for organizing and coordinating a staff of professional and technical personnel engaged in compounding and dispensing medications and other pharmaceutical supplies. The incumbent functions as a staff pharmacist and supervisor in coordinating and/or directing the activities of pharmacists and pharmacy technicians including: planning, organizing and reviewing work, resolving personnel matters, dealing effectively and professionally with employees in regards to employee-management concerns, and administering annual performance appraisals. The Pharmacist Supervisor functions as part of the pharmacy management team to accomplish the department's mission, vision, and goals.

Other essential duties and responsibilities of this role include:
1. Practice of Pharmacy
a. Reviews, interprets, and verifies medication orders and prescriptions for appropriateness
b. Processes, fills, and verifies medication orders and prescriptions
c. Interacts with and makes recommendations to other clinical staff regarding medication therapy ordered to ensure safe and effective care
d. Reviews the patient's medications, allergies, labs, and other pertinent information from the medical record to identify and solve medication-related problems
e. Contacts providers as appropriate
f. Documents recommendations and interventions
g. Provides drug information
h. Oversees technician staff in all aspects of medication distribution
2. Personnel Management / Staff Supervision
a. Plans, organizes, directs, and supervises the functions of pharmacy staff using leadership skills in gaining cooperation to accomplish goals, facilitating a system of responsiveness for pharmaceutical products 24/7/365
b. Ensures accountability among staff in meeting performance standards by establishing and monitoring results-oriented performance measures and addressing deficits in a timely manner. Provides regular performance feedback to staff, including counseling, disciplining, and completion of annual performance appraisals.
c. Assists in the interviewing, hire, and onboarding of pharmacists and technicians
d. Scheduling
i. Maintains control of department schedule with respect to adequate training, staffing and coverage of vacancies.
ii. Responsible for reviewing and approving PTO requests and timecards.
iii. Responsible for maintenance of tracking/monitoring system for any deviations from the posted schedules
e. Works in conjunction with clinical staff and the Center for Learning to provide for the educational needs of staff through coaching, mentoring and supporting opportunities for learning
f. Develops, updates, and maintains job descriptions and performance standards
g. Ensures all pharmacists and technicians are competent to perform their professional duties and responsibilities
h. Provides guidance and assistance with resolving complex employee relations matters
3. Legal & Regulatory Compliance
a. Maintains thorough knowledge and understanding of Federal, State, and Local laws as well as FDA, DEA, USP, NIOSH, and Joint Commission regulations pertaining to the practice of pharmacy. Ensures adherence to these principles as per departmental policies and standard operating procedures.
b. Establishes and maintains strict controls and accountability for all medications stored in the pharmacy and hospice facilities to be dispensed or administered to patients
c. Ensures integrity of the medication supply
d. Facilitates the prompt retrieval all filed documents and dispensing records
4. CQI
a. Promptly addresses customer concerns and complaints
b. Ensures prompt and accurate preparation and distribution of drugs and other pharmaceuticals
c. Maintains a pharmacy that is neat, clean and organized and ensures all equipment is maintained in working order
d. Provides analysis, process redesign recommendations, and support to appropriate project teams.
e. Assists in the maintenance of quality control programs, ensuring department functions in accordance with all standards, government and accrediting agency regulations
5. Policies and procedures
a. Assists with planning, developing and implementing policies and procedures
b. Interprets policies and procedures for subordinates
6. Other duties as deemed necessary

• Education: Graduate of an Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) accredited College or School of Pharmacy with a baccalaureate degree in pharmacy (BS Pharmacy) and/or a Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) degree
• Licensure: Licensed as a Pharmacist with the Florida Department of Health, Board of Pharmacy
• Continuing education: Meet continuing education requirements as noted by the Florida Department of Health, Board of Pharmacy Division
• Experience: Four years’ experience in a hospital or community pharmacy strongly preferred; 1-2 years supervisory experience strongly preferred
