HIM Coding Specialist (PRN)

The HIM Coding Specialist (PRN) is responsible for auditing clinical documentation to assure accuracy and appropriateness of the assigned ICD-10-CM diagnostic codes.

JOB DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Performs analysis and evaluation of clinical documentation, ensuring documentation supports terminal prognosis.
  2. Assign ICD-10-CM codes as necessary and enter into the EHR.
  3. Works collaboratively with the IDT to follow-up on documentation needs to support terminal diagnosis.
  4. Responds to IDT request to change the ICD-10-CM diagnosis in accordance with clinical documentation and physician orders.
  5. Develops and maintains professional skills and knowledge through training programs including education sessions for and ICD-10-CM.
  6. Demonstrates a thorough understanding of Coding Guidelines.
  7. Demonstrates understanding of agency policies which impact Coding functions and takes ownership for compliance for own area of responsibility.
  8. Collaborates with Supervisor as necessary to clarify and verify information. Reports opportunities identified in concurrent and retrospective clinical documentation to support quality, regulatory compliance and effective coding.
  9. Respects the confidentiality of information related to patients, volunteers, visitors and co-workers.
  10. Continuously strives to contain costs through the proper use of supplies.
  11. Participates in department meetings, agency required in-service programs, and department QAPI activities. Consistently demonstrates awareness and willingness to fulfill Service Excellence Commitments.
  12. Works collaboratively with team members, other departments and clinical staff consistent with the Mission and Vision of the agency.
  13. Willingly performs similar or related tasks as assigned.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS:

  • Education and/or Experience: High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Certifications: AHIMA or AAPC Certified Professional Coder; RHIT; or RHIA preferred.
  • One to two years experience with expertise in utilizing ICD-10-CM coding conventions preferred.
  • Knowledgeable in medical terminology, disease processes, and pharmacology.
  • Working knowledge of electronic health records computer systems, Microsoft applications, data integrity and processing techniques required.
  • Knowledge of HIPAA rules and regulations pertaining to patient’s information and confidentiality.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Accurate and detail oriented.
  • Able to work well with physicians, clinical staff and coworkers in a team environment.
